Abstract: The Machine Shop Buddy Verification System serves to improve the safety in a machine shop by only supplying power to machines when at least two individuals are within the room. Our design’s two-factor approach uses heart rate monitoring to ensure two unique users are present and a trilateration system to ensure the heart rate monitors are each being worn by a person within the machine shop and not a person in a room next door. While this system was intended to fulfill a need for safety within a machine shop at the University of Illinois, it could potentially be extended to help prevent machine shop disasters around the world.
